Clinton campaign chairman John Podesta’s Twitter was hacked

The Twitter account belonging to Hillary Clinton’s campaign chairman John Podesta appears to have been hacked, days after hacked emails from his personal email account were released on the WikiLeaks website.

At 7:55 p.m. on Wednesday night, the account sent out a tweet that said, “I’ve switched teams. Vote Trump 2016. Hi pol.”

It is unclear who is responsible for the errant tweet, which was later deleted. But the addition of “Hi pol” in the message was taken as a reference to 4chan’s /pol/ boards, a largely anonymous nexus of alt-right support for Trump by many of the board’s posters.

On Friday, thousands of emails from Podesta’s account were hacked and are being investigated by the FBI as part of a broader probe into Russian hacking to interfere in the 2016 election. WikiLeaks, which releases private secrets, has threatened to continue releasing a steady stream of Podesta’s emails, likely until the election.

Clinton spokesman Nick Merrill confirmed that Podesta’s Twitter account had been hacked.

“We’re working on fixing it.”

Abby Ohlheiser contributed to this report.
